I'm 71, soon to be 72. The thought of starting a new series, learning a new skill, understanding a new technology are both invigorating and overwhelming all at the same time. My ability to navigate the website, the social media, the way to connect with the "outside" world has been an ongoing adventure; feeling as if I get it and knowing that maybe I don't.
One thing remains constant - the work. Fore me, there are no more galleries, no more shared studios, no more circle of artists that surround and sustain. Through a series of moves and life changes, I've landed here: in a wonderful community of seniors that have given me the gift of solitude and the ability to just experiment and create without a lot of outside interference. It's a gift and a curse. I'm not interrupted and sometimes crave interruption.
I return to the work - a sustained practice that yields results some days and frustration others but it really doesn't matter, the work continues. This practice - the wearables, the gardens, the occasional drawings and paintings along with the cooking which sustains me. The paths winding through this neighborhood, the areas set up for relaxation and reflection - I'm grateful for all of it and also happy to leave to venture out into the city, to the museums, to see what others are doing and making and then return to the quiet. The best of both worlds.
Venturing out and then retreating into a sunny room surrounded with my materials and possibilities.
This journey is my destination.
